Recently I read of an Episcopal Priest in Seattle, Washington, who also accepted the Muslim religion. On Sundays she puts on her priestly vestments to worship God Almighty. The rest of the time she says daily prayers to the god of Mohammed with her Muslim group.
There are some obvious problems, such as the Muslim religion not recognizing Jesus as the Son of God, but as just a good man. There are a few other problems between Christianity and the Muslim religion – like not believing in Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection -- but she doesn’t deal with these. Her bishop calls her choice “exciting,” saying “It’s a matter of interpretation.”
When I hear people say that, I want to ask them how the scriptures were interpreted before they were born? Truth is still truth. It has not changed. Human beings keep trying to change it. But truth, like God, does not change.
Jesus described His own mission as a liberation movement against the powers of evil.
He asked in Mark 3:23-24, "How can Satan drive out Satan? If a kingdom is divided against itself, that kingdom cannot stand.” Jesus regards us as under the influence of the powers of evil. He regards Himself as the one who limits those powers of evil in order that we might be set free. He offers freedom from the idols that rob us of freedom. Why would we put ourselves under the power of false gods?
We die to our old self as we obey the Father of Jesus. We thereby become free of idols and other gods as we enter in to friendship with God. Our response to Jesus will determine whether idols keep us from lives of true love, joy, and peace. Our response to Him will determine whether we live or die.
In Mark 8:29, Jesus asks each of us: "Who do you say I am?" We owe him an answer, sooner rather than later. The apostle Paul has given us a good hint of the right answer in Romans 5:8: "God proves His own love for us in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us."
Don’t be confused by those who would equate truth with evil and claim it doesn’t matter. There is no way to reconcile any false religion with the words of Jesus in John 14:6: "Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life; no man cometh to the Father but by Me."
Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. All else is confusion, lies, and death. Through the living Son of God we find salvation, eternal life, and the love that loved us even before we were.
